Charlie Valvano at the International Bridge Competition
Our own Charlie Valvano qualified this year for the International Bridge Building Contest (IBBC) held at John Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. Students from all around the country brought their small, carefully designed bridges made from competition-issued sticks of basswood. The bridges were broken at the event by a special machine that recorded how many times its own weight each bridge held before failure. Charlie's bridge held 1919 times its own weight. Charlie placed 26th overall, beating all the other PA students who competed three regions of the Commonwealth.
